Theatre for a New Audience has revealed its line-up for the upcoming 2022-23 season, with plays by Shakespeare, Lope de Vega, Tennessee Williams, and more. New York premieres of works by Denis Johnson as well as Clark Young and Derek Goldman have also been announced. Performances will be held at the Polonsky Shakespeare Center.
Launching the season will be the New York premiere of Remember This: The Lesson of Jan Karski by Clark Young and Derek Goldman, with Goldman also at the helm. David Strathairn will star in the solo show, set to run September 10-October 9, as the titular World War II hero.
Denis Johnson’s Des Moines will also make its New York premiere with a run set for November 29–January 1, 2023. The work previously received a TFANA workshop with director Arin Arbus, who will return to helm the full production. “Denis Johnson was a keen and loving observer of life,” said Arbus in a statement. “He wrote about what’s holy and hilarious and hard in our daily lives, and was interested in the eternal human struggle to be awake to life in an uncontrollable and incomprehensible universe.”
Dakin Matthews’ adaptation of Henry IV, Part 1 and Henry IV, Part 2 will be presented next, running January 26–February 5, 202. Presented in-the-round and directed by Eric Tucker, the Shakespeare plays will be presented in repertory with Christian Camargo starring in Richard II.
Also planned for the season are Lope de Vega’s 17th century drama Fuente Ovejuna, directed by Flordelino Lagundino in his TFANA debut and set for April 29–May 28, 2023; and Tennesse Williams’ Orpheus Descending starring Christopher Abbott and Maggie Siff, running July 9–August 6, 2023.
All TFANA productions will also feature free post-performance discussions after select shows, and this season inaugurates Reflections, post-shows discussions with artists and activists hosted by essayist and commentator Bianca Vivion Brooks.
