The world premiere of Samuel D. Hunter's A Case for the Existence of God closes June 5 after receiving three one-week extensions. Performances began April 12 for the show, which officially opened May 2. The two-hander play closes out Signature's 30th anniversary season.

Co-starring former college roommates Kyle Beltran and Will Brill, the play explores alienation and companionship under the direction of Tony winner David Cromer. A Case for the Existence of Godunfolds in a cubicle in Southern Idaho and follows Keith and Ryan, two men who unexpectedly choose to open up each of their worlds to the other.

The run, which officially opened May 2 on the Irene Diamond Stage at The Pershing Square Signature Center, was originally set to complete its run May 15. Reviews for the show can be read here.

The creative team also includes scenic designer 2022 Tony nominee Arnulfo Maldonado, costume designer Brenda Abbandandolo, lighting designer Tyler Micoleau, sound designer Christopher Darbassie, dramaturg John Baker, and production stage manager Katie Young. Casting is by Caparelliotis Casting.

In a statement, Hunter said, “In the play, there are moments of lashing out on both characters’ parts — and I think it’s because culturally we don’t have a language for platonic male love, especially between a straight man and a gay man. The expectations of gender norms compacts men’s—and especially straight men’s—emotional and spiritual lives as they grow up. In the play, as their lives cave in and they lose the little control they have, the friendship they cultivate for one another is really through the condition of being bound up in a ball.”
