Off-Broadway's Park Avenue Armory has announced its 2023 season, which will feature the North American premieres of playwright-director Robert Icke's The Doctor and the debut of LOVE by Alexander Zeldin

Written and directed by Icke, The Doctor will be staged June 3-August 19, 2023. The thriller, which premiered at London's Almeida Theatre and currently runs at the West End's Duke of York's Theatre, is a loose adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler's Professor Bernhardi, The Doctor. With subversive casting featuring Olivier winner Juliet Stevenson in the titular role, The Doctor follows a doctor who prohibits a priest from visiting a dying patient. Icke presented his adaptation of Oresteia and Hamlet in repertory at the Armory as part of its 2022 season

Performances of British playwright-director Alexander Zeldin’s LOVE will run February 25-March 25, 2023. The play delves into the lives of families living in temporary public housing in the days before Christmas and how a broken welfare system has placed them there. Zeldin used personal interviews and first-hand accounts collected over years to write the play which will be performed with the house lights up. Part of his trilogy The Inequalities, LOVE arrives as Zeldin's New York debut after a premiere at London's National Theatre.

As part of its Making Space series, the theatre will present Symposium: Sound and Color — The Future of Race in Design January 14-15, 2023. Lighting designer Jane Cox, playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, set designer Mimi Lien, as well as sound designer and composer Mikaal Sulaiman will discuss race matters in theatrical design.

Co-presented with Harlem Stage May 20, 2023, Hapo Na Zamani (Black Arts Movement Past and Present) will explore the 1960s and 1970s cultural movement of Black artists and activists who shaped African American culture. Carrie Mae Weems and Carl Hancock Rux will host the event with musical direction by Vernon Reid.

Another co-production will be Salon: Revolutionary Hope co-presented with the National Black Theatre June 18, 2023. The event will feature Claudia Rankine discussing undercurrents of American democracy with other artists inspired by the dialogue between James Baldwin and Audre Lorde about the similarities and differences of the histories Black men and women.

The season will also feature Doppelganger, a theatrical staging of Schwanengesang; multidisciplinary work Mutant;Destrudo; and a pairing of dance pieces The Rite of Spring and common ground[s] by Germain Acogny.
