A Little Life, directed by Ivo van Hove, begins its U.S. premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music October 20. Presented as part of the Next Wave 2022 Festival in the Howard Gilman Opera House, performances are set through October 29.

Based on the best-selling novel by Hanya Yanagihara and adapted by Koen Tachelet, the play explores the complex relationships between four friends—a lawyer, an actor, an architect, and an artist. Taking place over the course of three decades, A Little Life follows them from college to their middle-age lives in New York City. The show is presented in German with English subtitles.

Van Hove's creative team includes dramaturgy by Bart Van den Eynde, scenography and lighting design by Jan Versweyveld, music and sound design by Eric Sleichim, and costume design by An D’Huys. Translation is by Kitty Pouwels and Josephine Ruitenberg.

The Tony Award-winning director first premiered A Little Life at Amsterdam's Stadsschouwburg as the 2018-2019 season opener for Netherlands repertory company Toneelgroep Amsterdam, where Van Hove has served as artistic director since 2001.

The show is produced by Schaubühne Berlin in co-production with Festival Athens and Festival d'Avignon.
