They're in the bright lights. Stereophonic by David Adjmi has won the Tony Award for Best Play at The 77th Annual Tony Awards, held at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater June 16.
The play has had a very successful Tony night after making history as the most Tony nominated play in Broadway history, with wins for Direction of a Play (Daniel Aukin), Featured Actor (Will Brill), Sound Design (Ryan Rumery), and Scenic Design (David Zinn).
The play, which follows an unnamed '70s rock band recording their sophomore album, made history as the play with the most Tony Award nominations ever, at 13. It features original music by Will Butler, formerly of the band Arcade Fire. It recently announced an extension until January 5, 2025 at the Golden Theatre.
The cast features 2024 Tony winner Will Brill, Andrew R. Butler, Juliana Canfield, Eli Gelb, Tom Pecinka, Sarah Pidgeon, and Chris Stack. The show originally ran Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in late 2023. Rave reviews and positive word of mouth led to an extension Off-Broadway and then a fast Broadway transfer, with the full cast reprising their roles.
