Classic Stage Company will give a one-night-only benefit performance of the Pulitzer-winning musical Fiorello! October 7, with three-time Tony nominee Christopher Fitzgerald (Spamalot, Company) starring in the title role. Tony winner Kathleen Marshall will direct.
Featuring a book by Jerome Weidman and George Abbott, music by Jerry Bock, and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, Fiorello! centers on the life story of famed New York City mayor Fiorello La Guardia. The show first opened on Broadway in 1959 winning Best Musical at the 1960 Tony Awards, along with that year's Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Additional casting, by Alaine Alldaffer and Lisa Donadio, is to be announced.
“With elections front of mind this fall, there couldn’t be a better time to revisit the great political musical Fiorello!," says CSC Producing Artistic Director Jill Rafson in a statement. “This piece is as trenchant as ever, perhaps contextualizing our present as much as it illuminates our past. And with Christopher in the title role, we’ll all get to see this show through a fresh new perspective."
Tickets begin at $100, with some levels including access to a post-show reception. Rush tickets priced at $35 will be available beginning an hour before the performance.
