With one month until Lewberger & The Wizard of Friendship begins performances Off-Broadway, comedy band Lewberger has released a video detailing their journey to bring the show from the west coast to the east coast, and the ways in which Broadway stars have supported their adventure.
"It's like The Wizard of Oz meets Labyrinth meets a weird '90s VHS" says Alex Lewis, when pressed to describe the meta-theatrical musical.
"Our deep friendship's breaking, therefore breaking the Wizard of Friendship's heart" elaborates cofounder Hughie Stone Fish. "We get sent into the land of NoFriendia, to defeat the part of ourselves that make us bad friends... it's a nutso, buttso ride."
Initially intended to be a streaming property, the original iteration of the production was not picked up by producers after a sold out west coast run. To learn more about how the show came to its current state, watch the video above!
Lewberger & The Wizard of Friendship follows a fictional fight between the members of comedy band Lewberger that creates a rift so big between them that it breaks the heart of the Wizard of Friendship. Sent on a musical quest in the land of NoFriendia, their adventure takes them through "the intimidatingly Handsome Forest, through the Adults-only Haunted House, and many more amazing places all while being guided by… a giant… sausage man."
Double-billed with the musical, Lewberger will also perform their viral songs from YouTube and TikTok in Lewberger in Concert. Performances will begin February 23 at Theatre Row for a run through March 26.
The band stars Keith Habersberger of The Try Guys, actor and comedian Alex Lewis, and Emmy-winning songwriter Hughie Stone Fish. The musical is produced by Steven Brandon and Lewberger LLC, and choreographed by Nico DeJesus.
In addition to their viral Internet presence, the band has performed on America's Got Talent and NBC's Bring The Funny, in addition to releasing their comedy special Lewberger: Live at Lincoln Hall on Amazon Prime.
