This article was originally published September 27, 2015 in honor of The Muppets debuting on ABC. In honor of Disney+ releasing all five seasons of The Muppet Show February 19, this piece has been updated.
In honor of the return of Kermit, Miss Piggy, and friends, we thought it would be fun to dream cast the Muppets in different roles on Broadway. Playbill turned to Facebook and Twitter to ask its readers which roles they'd like to see the Muppets star in on Broadway—and then we made those dreams a (photo) reality!
Check it out below.
Miss Piggy as Peggy in Hamilton
Would the star be willing to step into a supporting role? Sharing a name save for one letter might help, but we also can't imagine anything bringing Miss Piggy more joy than snapping her fingers on the beat of "Work!" in the Schuyler Sister's epononymous number. (Submission unknown)
Gonzo in Cabaret
Gonzo and his lovely girlfriend, Camilla the Chicken, are performers through and through, much like the Emcee and the Kit Kat Club girls in Cabaret. Their rendition of "Two Ladies" or "Two Chickens" would leave audiences in stitches. (Submission by @Sagaofjamesy)
Animal as Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Animal, much like Hedwig, is a true rock star. His performance of "Wig in a Box" might need some subtitles, but he would still blow the roof off nightly. (Submission by Logan Culwell-Block)
Miss Piggy as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard
Miss Piggy, star of stage and screen and diva extraordinaire, would deliver an incredible "With One Look"...although Piggy could never fade into obscurity. (Submission by @symbosimbo)
Kermit the Frog as Sweeney Todd in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Usually seen as silly and sweet, Kermit would have to dig deep to find enough darkness inside to portray the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Audiences who saw Kermit and Miss Piggy as the murderous duo would surely be in for a bloody good time. (Submission by Brandon Boring)
Janice as Carole King in Beautiful
Janice, the lead guitar player of Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, has an intense musical background just like Carole King. Her rendition of "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" would surely be showstopping. (Submission by Alec Carroll)
Statler and Waldorf as Daisy and Violet Hilton in Side Show
Statler and Waldorf, the Muppets' resident curmudgeons, are never seen without each other...much like Daisy and Violet, the conjoined twin sisters in Side Show. (Submission by David Culliton)
