The New Ohio Theatre presents a remounting of George & Co.’s dark comedy Holden January 5. Originally developed and staged at the theatre’s 2015 Ice Factory Festival, the acclaimed show returns Off-Broadway for a limited engagement through January 14 only.

Holden is written and directed by Anisa George in collaboration with the George & Co ensemble.

Holden takes place inside J.D. Salinger’s private bunker, occupied by a group of obsessive super fans of his most famous novel, The Catcher in the Rye. “Unbeknownst to the reclusive author himself, their mission to get Salinger to publish once more spirals into a larger excavation of violence in America and the male imagination,” read production notes.

George’s original concept in creating Holden was to write a play about three assassins who carried a copy of The Catcher in the Rye to the scenes of their crimes, however the proliferation of mass shootings in the U.S. during its development pushed the story in a different direction.

“When I hear there’s been yet another mass shooting in America,” says George in a press statement, “I feel like 'the boy in the people shooting hat' who Salinger created, has been irrevocably corrupted and has manifested himself in the world in a way Salinger could never imagine.”

The performers and co-creators include Jaime Maseda, Matteo Scammell, Scott Sheppard, Bill George, and George Truman.

The production team includes Nick Benacerraf (scenic design), Alex Bechtel (sound design), Seth Reiser (lighting design), Rebecca Kanach (costume design), Cem Ozdeniz (props design) and Madeline Charne (production stage manager and dramaturge).
