Dates and the design team have been revealed for the Sam Gold-directed Broadway revival of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
As previously announced, Children's & Family Emmy winner Kit Connor (Heartstopper) and Golden Globe winner Rachel Zegler (María in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story) will star in Romeo + Juliet, which will feature music by Grammy winner Jack Antonoff and movement by Tony winner Sonya Tayeh.
The 16-week limited engagement is scheduled to begin previews September 26 at Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre with an official opening October 24. The newly announced design team includes scenic designer dots, costume designer Enver Chakartash, lighting designer Isabella Byrd, and sound designer Cody Spencer with production stage management by Rachel Bauder. 101 Productions, Ltd. will serve as general manager with casting by Taylor Williams. (Dots, Chakartash, Byrd, and Spencer are all 2024 Tony nominees.)
The production has also released a new music video, set to the Bleachers song "Tiny Moves," which can be viewed above.
Director Gold said in an earlier statement, “With the presidential election
coming up in November, I felt like making a show this fall that
celebrates youth and hope, and unleashes the anger young people feel
about the world they are inheriting."
Press notes for the revival describe the classic tragedy as such: "The youth are fucked. Left to their own devices in their parents’ world of violent ends, an impulsive pair of star-crossed lovers hurtle towards their inescapable fate. The intoxicating high of passion quickly descends into a brutal chaos that can only end one way."
The upcoming production will mark the Broadway debuts of Connor, Zegler, and Antonoff, who won his third consecutive Grammy Award for Producer of the Year in February. Connor's Heartstopper co-star, Joe Locke, recently made his Broadway debut in the revival of Sweeney Todd.
Additional casting will be announced.
Romeo + Juliet will be produced on Broadway by Seaview.
A separate West End staging of Romeo & Juliet features Francesca Amewudah-Rivers as Juliet opposite Tom Holland as Romeo in a new version directed by Jamie Lloyd.
Early access fan pre-sale tickets to the Broadway revival are now available. Tickets will go on sale to the general public May 23 at 10 AM ET and will be available at the box office until June 23. The box office will reopen for in-person sales August 22. Visit RomeoandJulietNYC.com.
