Lozano and Cuenca developed the musical as part of their work in the 2020-2021 cohort of The Civilians' R&D Group. The Civilians is an investigative theatre company based in Brooklyn which commissions and fosters work, particularly musicals, that are based in research delving into real-life experiences such as Lucas Hnath's Dana H. which was directed by The Civilians' Artistic Director Steve Cosson. Desaparecidas was also developed in an artist residency at JACK the same year.
