Off-Broadway News Video: Why Holland Taylor Said Yes to N/A Despite Just Getting a Shoulder Replacement

The Emmy winner stars opposite Ana Villafañe as they play two congresswomen who bear a resemblance to real people.

"I can't do a play," was legendary actor Holland Taylor's first thought when she was approached to star in N/A. She had just gotten a shoulder replacement, and she wasn't looking to do something as physically difficult as theatre. But then she read the new play by first-time playwright Mario Correa, based on his own experience working as a Congressional aid. Even before she finished it, "I called him up and I said, 'I'll do it.'"

After Taylor said yes, it was an easy yes from her co-star, Ana Villafañe. Watch the two talk about N/A in the video above, which is currently in performances through August 4 at Off-Broadway's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center.

The work follows two congresswomen—N, the first female speaker of the house (Taylor), and A, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress (Villafañe). Inspired by real people and events, N/A depicts the pair in a battle of wills and wits on the perilous path to progress. Though the production doesn't specify who the real-life figures are represented in the play, the character descriptions and show poster bear a resemblance to U.S. House Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

"Of course, these are real people that the public knows about," admits Taylor, but she added that the point of the play are "the ideas: two different generations, two different points of view and how do they get along...in the government."

Tony winner Diane Paulus directs. The creative team includes scenic and costume designer Myung Hee Cho, lighting designer Mextly Couzin, sound designer Sunny Kil, and projection designer Yee Eun Nam. Casting is by Tesley & Co's Will Cantler.

N/A is produced by Jeffrey Richards, Bob Boyett, Louise Gund, Hunter Arnold, M/B/P Productions, and Broadway Breakfast Club.
