On June 11, Broadway gathered to celebrate the 2022-23 season, held uptown at United Palace theatre. While some outfits at this year's 76th Tony Awards were gorgeously loud, others took the red carpet classics in subtle and interesting directions—and invited a closer look to appreciate their magnificence.

Ranging from playful suits to nuanced floral dresses, these looks put subtle spins on the classics. Surprising Suits

Rachel Hauck, Justin Cooley, Jordan E. Cooper, and Utkarsh Ambudkar all decided to go for the classic suit, but in eye-catching prints.

2023 Tony nominee Rachel Hauck wore a head-to-toe suit printed with copper-colored birds. She made a sharp pair with her date, director Lisa Peterson, who wore a turquoise suit.

2023 Tony nominee Justin Cooley went for a watercolor aesthetic in this abstract floral print with an elongated suit jacket. Jake Sokoloff styled Cooley in a custom suit designed by Brandon Gray of Grayscale.

2023 two-time Tony nominee Jordan E. Cooper went for monochromatic leather in this embellished suit by Off-White. The look, styled by Ebony Brown, also featured a reference to his show Ain't No Mo' with an airplane pendant around his neck. Jewelry was by H.Crowne.

Award presenter Utkarsh Ambudkar wore a variegated woven suit, and brought a playful turntable-themed bag to complete the ensemble. Styled by John Tan, Ambudkar wore a suit by Stephen Mikhail's Atelier Cillian, a watch from Fabergé, and a bowtie from title of work. Judith Leiber designed the bag, while Sareen Bhojwani provided hair and makeup styling.

Springtime Whimsy

Florals for spring aren’t groundbreaking, but they’re classic. Take a look at how Micaela Diamond, Amy Herzog, and Lorna Courtney put their take on the tried-and-true look.

2023 Tony nominee Micaela Diamond went for a tiered look of big florals emphasized with black stripes. Styled by Sarah Slutsky Tooley and Vogue, Diamond's Carolina Herrera by Wes Gordon dress was paired with Roger Vivier shoes, and Eva Fehren and Sydney Evan jewelry. Christie Lee was both makeup artist and hair stylist.

2023 Tony nominee Amy Herzog went for a softer boho look in a lace slip dress embellished with a sequined floral design.

2023 Tony nominee Lorna Courtney went for a simple silhouette with a giant bow to show off luxurious coloring of her gown's florals. Styled by Emily Sanchez, Courtney wore the Markarian dress with shoes by Alexandre Birman and jewelry from Fred Leighton and Kwiat Diamonds. Karla Serrano styled Courtney's hair into a curly updo, and makeup was by Nicole Bueno.

Turning the Red Carpet Green

Shades of seafoam and sage, to olive and teal, on the likes of Marcel Spears, Dominique Fawn Hill, Jae Gurley, Bee Shaffer, Erich Bergen, and Helen Park made green one of the hottest red carpet colors to wear.

Marcel Spears went understated in a black shirt and pants paired with a minty jacket.

2023 Tony nominee Dominique Fawn Hill brought nature goddess vibes with this flowing green dress.

Jae Gurley stuns in a corseted emerald gown from Miss Circle.

Bee Shaffer wore an olive velvet dress from Dior Haute Couture with a pair of Briony Raymond Estate earrings while in attendance with her mother, Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour.

Erich Bergen went for head-to-toe teal in a Tom Ford suit. His lapel was adorned with a pin from Fleur'd Pins. Kirsten Sylvester was his makeup artist.

2023 Tony nominee Helen Park wore a desaturated sage gown complete with sparkling sheer black tulle across the bodice. The dress was designed by Andrew Kwon, and worn with Mimi So jewelry. Hair was by Jenny Kim and makeup was by Angel Gabriel.

It’s in the Details

Sometimes the longer you look, the more you see—a characteristic true of the suits worn by Brandon Uranowitz, JJ Niemann, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Michael Arden.

2023 Tony winner Brandon Uranowitz put a spin on the classic all-black suit with a bow at the neck and a draped detail spilling out of his left suit jacket pocket.

JJ Niemann's blue suit featured a buttoned waist belt detail with a blue striped shawl tucked in that wrapped under the collar, which ended in the suit's breast pocket (courtesy of David Withrow).

There are no visible buttons on the custom metallic grey suit that 2023 Tony nominee Yahya Abdul-Mateen II wore from Ferragamo.

2023 Tony winner Michael Arden went for texture with a tweed suit and tie that definitely invited a closer look.
