The play was written by Rick Elice, with musical interludes by Wayne Barker and is based on Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s 2004 novel "Peter and The Starcatchers."

Here's how the production at Theatreworks is billed, "Peter and the Starcatcher ignites the imagination as it takes audiences on a sea-faring adventure. As the play opens on the docks of a bustling 19th century British port, Lord Leonard Aster, his precocious daughter Molly and her nanny Mrs. Bumbrake prepare to board a ship. Lord Aster, on a top secret mission to transport mysterious and powerful “starstuff” for the Queen, sends Molly and her vigilant chaperone on the Neverland, while he himself boards the faster, more dangerous Wasp, believing that Molly will be safer, little knowing what perils lie ahead. Meanwhile, Grempkin, the sadistic schoolmaster of St. Norbert’s Orphanage for Lost Boys, makes a deal to sell three of his young wards, Ted, Prentiss, and the nameless Boy, to wicked Slank, the cruel captain of the Neverland. Molly quickly befriends the three boys onboard the Neverland and together they face pirates, shipwreck, magic, mermaids, and the difficult decisions that come with growing up. The plucky band of kids encounters no shortage of outsized characters, including the brutish yet bumbling pirate captain Black Stache. Peter and the Starcatcher is a heartwarming adventure that will remind audiences of the limitless imagination of childhood, and why one Boy refused to grow up."

The play originally opened on Broadway in 2012 and was nominated for nine Tony Awards – winning five including Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play for Christian Borle.
