Make a pot of tea and curl up with a good (streaming) murder mystery this January.

Hulu has one starring Tony winner Mandy Patinkin and Apple TV+ has Doctor Who's Peter Capaldi. If mysteries aren't your thing, Prime Video is offering a different kind of thriller with an animated musical series about the Princess of Hell. And don't miss the second installment of Ryan Murphy's Feud, this season centering on writer Truman Capote and his New York society "swans."

Apple TV+

West End regular Cush Jumbo (The River) stars alongside 12th Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi in the new London crime thriller Criminal Record. In the mystery series, the two play police detectives drawn into a confrontation over an old murder case. Created by Paul Rutman, the complex drama also tackles institutional racism and a corrupt judicial system. Episodes begin streaming January 10.

Amazon Prime Video

Mean Girl Erika Henningsen stars as the princess of Hell, Charlie Morningstar, in the adult animated musical series  Hazbin HotelWith the help of her bff Vaggie (In the Heights and Encanto's Stephanie Beatriz), Charlie opens a hotel to rehabilitate sinners. Blake Roman and Amir Talai also star, with several Broadway voices slated for appearances, including Alex Brightman, Joel Perez, Kimiko Glenn, Christian Borle, Jeremy Jordan, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Patina Miller, and Darren Criss. The series from indie film studio A24 is based on the 2019 viral internet pilot created by animator Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano. Stream it beginning January 19.

Hulu

We love a murder mystery. We love a murder mystery when all the suspects are trapped on a Mediterranean ocean liner. And with Tony winner Mandy Patinkin playing "the world's greatest detective," count us all in. In Death and Other Details, prime suspect Imogene Scott (played by Violett Bean) must team up with genius gumshoe Rufus Coatsworthe (Patinkin) to prove her innocence. The mystery series is created by showrunners Mike Weiss and Heidi Cole McAdams based on the works of the golden age of detective novels (think Agatha Christie). Tony winner Lauren Patten co-stars. The first two episodes drop January 16, followed by weekly releases.

Creator Ryan Murphy is back on the small screen with a second installment of his Feud anthology. The 2017 first season focused on the battle between Hollywood divas Joan Crawford and Bette Davis during the filming of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? For this second season, the action jumps to New York society with Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans. The series is based on the book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era by Laurence Leamer and adapted for screen by Tony-nominated playwright Jon Robin Baitz. Tony and Olivier nominee Tom Hollander stars as author Truman Capote, who, though born into poverty in the American rural south, ascended into the ranks of Manhattan’s upper crust through his literary career. His friendship with the clique of New York’s richest, most glamourous women, whom he nicknamed “the swans,” soured when he exposed their most intimate secrets—drug use, extramarital affairs, and even murder—in an excerpt of his final work "Answered Prayers," published in Esquire magazine. The series boasts a flock of today’s Hollywood leading ladies as the mid-century socialites including Naomi Watts as Babe Paley, Diane Lane as Slim Keith, Chloë Sevigny as C.Z. Guest, and Calista Flockhart as Lee Radziwill, along with Demi Moore as Ann Woodward, Molly Ringwald as Joanne Carson, Treat Williams as Bill Paley, Joe Mantello as Jack Dunphy and Russell Tovey as John O’Shea. The first two episodes of the eight-episode series will premiere January 31 on FX, and will be available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
