Holiday theatregoing has fortunes on the rise on Broadway. With 36 shows currently on the boards—one less than the previous week—cumulative box office went up by more than 4% last week. While not matching the Thanksgiving-week bonanza, that's still an encouraging sign that we have some impressive highs to look forward to with Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, and New Year's on the horizon.
And leading the pack when it comes to that box-office surge last week was the starry new revival of Gypsy, which saw the biggest uptick of any show, to the tune of a $215,585.88 increase that brought the production to a grand total of $1.8 million. That landed the new staging as the sixth highest grosser of the week, and with opening night set for December 19, that means it did that even with much of their performances comped for press. Once that's over in a week or two, it seems more than likely that we will be seeing Gypsy in the top five, and likely a mainstay in The $2 Million Club, too.
That top five, by the way, was filled by usual suspects Wicked, The Lion King, Hamilton, Elf, and Sunset Blvd.—and all but the last handily made The $2 Million Club. Only 14 of the 36 currently running shows failed to make The $1 Million Club, which really shows you how much business is booming on Broadway this holiday season. And 93% of seats were filled across Broadway, too, with 314,951 people taking in a show last week. And they paid an average ticket price of nearly $140.
The holiday is so strong that we're continuing to beat last season by a pretty fair margin. Compared to the same period of time last year, this season is beating the 2023-2024 season by more than 15%, a metric that's up a point from last week. That figure can often go hand-in-hand with ticket prices, but this time around it's almost completely due to Broadway hosting more shows and more theatregoers. Comparing the same two periods, attendance is beating last season by 14.89%—a near-identical match to the grosses—whereas average paid admission is beating last season by just 0.25%. There's been a nearly 13% increase in available performances, showing how important inventory is on the Main Stem.
