Suzan-Lori Parks' Topdog/Underdog won the 2023 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play at the 76th Annual Tony Awards, held June 11 at United Palace in Washington Heights.
"This time around we were golden!," said Parks on stage after the win, referencing the work's lack of Tony Awards for its 2002 original production. “Theatre is the great cure. Thank you for acknowledging our contribution."
Others in the category included August Wilson's The Piano Lesson, A Doll's House, and The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window.
This production marks the first Broadway revival of Topdog/Underdog since the play's 2002 Broadway debut. Corey Hawkins and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II starred in the two-hander under the direction of Tony winner Kenny Leon. Both stars were Tony-nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play.
The original production received two 2002 Tony nominations, including Best Play, and won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, making Parks the first Black woman to win the honor.
