Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the songwriting duo behind Smash—and the Marilyn Monroe-inspired musical Bombshell, which took shape before television audiences’ eyes—say that a full-length stage version of Bombshell is still on track.
“We’ve been talking to book writers, yes,” Wittman told the press on an invited-only conference call for the December 7 broadcast of Hairspray Live!
Shaiman added, “We actually, just this morning, got an email about a very exciting possible collaborator, and a real future for that. But, we’ve been—as they say a lot on Facebook—‘blessed’ to be so busy that we haven’t had all the time to really, really focus on that. We’ve been working on all these new things—if I can call Hairspray Live! a new thing, [which] it is! But I really do think there is a real life for Bombshell. Luckily, [chairman of NBC Entertainment] Bob Greenblat is still just incredibly supportive of it.”
Wittman said, “He’s our fairy godfather, I guess!”
Following the success of the one-night-only June 8, 2015, Broadway concert staging of Bombshell, Universal Stage Productions announced that the property is in development as a full-length stage musical.
