Kyle Beltran (The Amateurs, Head of Passes), Enver Gjokaj (As You Like It), and Rebecca Naomi Jones (As You Like It, Significant Other) will star in the New York premiere of Fire in Dreamland at The Public Theater this summer. The new play by Rinne Groff, directed by Marissa Wolf, is set to begin previews June 19.
Set in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, Fire in Dreamland follows disillusioned do-gooder Kate (Jones) and Jaap (Gjokaj), a charismatic European making a film about the 1911 fire that burned down Coney Island’s Dreamland amusement park. Billed as a play that "breaks the boundaries of time and space," and a story that looks at the potential to create in the face of devastation, the work was originally commissioned by The Public and Berkeley Repertory Theatre.
The New York premiere of Fire in Dreamland will feature scenic and costume design by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Amith Chandrashaker, and original music and sound design by Brendan Aanes.
The production will run through August 5 in The Public’s Anspacher Theater, with an official opening on July 16.
Groff's plays and musicals include The Ruby Sunrise and Compulsion, both at The Public, directed by Oskar Eustis; 77% at the San Francisco Playhouse, also directed by Wolf; as well as What Then, Inky, and Jimmy Carter Was a Democrat.
