Manhattan Theatre Club’s U.S. premiere of The Children, a new play by Olivier Award winner Lucy Kirkwood (Chimerica), celebrates its official opening December 12. The production from London’s Royal Court plays Broadway following an acclaimed world premiere in the U.K.
In Kirkwood’s dark and surprising play, three retired nuclear engineers reunite in a remote cottage on the British coast. Outside, the world is reeling from a disaster, raising questions about who is responsible and what the solution looks like.

James Macdonald directs The Children at MTC’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. London cast members Francesca Annis (BBC’s Cranford), Olivier Award nominee Ron Cook (Juno and the Paycock), and Olivier Award winner Deborah Findlay (Stanley) reprise their roles on Broadway.
Performances of The Children began November 28. The production features scenic and costume design by Miriam Buether, lighting design by Peter Mumford, and sound design by Max Pappenheim.
