In addition to the previously announced world premieres of Annie Baker's Infinite Life and the musical Buena Vista Social Club, Atlantic Theater Company has announced three new works for the 2023–2024 season.
The new bilingual musical El Otro Oz, inspired by The Wizard of Oz, will premiere at Atlantic for Kids. The Mexican folk-infused musical features a book by Mando Alvarado and Tommy Newman and music and lyrics by Jaime Lozano and Newman. Melissa Crespo will direct. Originally commissioned, developed, and produced by TheaterWorksUSA, El Otro Oz will run at Atlantic Stage 2 January 13–February 18, 2024.
The American premiere of Lucy Kirkwood's The Welkin will play the Linda Gross Theater May 16–June 30, with an opening set for June 12. Set in rural England in 1759, the courtroom drama tasks 12 women to decide if a woman sentenced to death is telling the truth when she claims she is pregnant. Sarah Benson will direct. Kirkwood was Tony-nominated for her 2017 Broadway debut play The Children.
Shayan Lofti's What Became of Us will also make its world premiere at Atlantic Theater this season. The tale of two siblings born in different countries will play Stage 2 in May, with exact dates to be announced.
Annie Baker's Infinite Life is currently in previews and will officially open September 12. Buena Vista Social Club, featuring music by the titular Grammy-winning Cuban group, begins previews November 17.
