Lyricist and librettist Sam Carner (Island Song) has launched the Musical Creators' Institute training program. The program is now accepting aspiring composers, lyricists, book writers, and directors. 

Built and directed by Carner, the intensive and collaborative program will be guided by industry professionals including Adam Gwon (Ordinary Days), Andrea Daly (Next), Anna K. Jacobs (Teeth), Andy Collopy (The Lightning Thief), Marlo Hunter (Saved by the Bell), Kevin Hammonds (Up and Away), and Kent Nicholson (Broadway Licensing), with more to be announced. 

Spring 2024 courses will include Lyric Writing; Advanced Composition; Musical Theatre Bookwriting; Business of Musical Theatre; Finale Skills; Comedy Writing; Freelance Artist Manifesto; and The Core, which is a collaborative workshop intended to foster a community of musical theatre creators. 

Classes will be held at the Dramatists Guild's Mary Rodgers Room beginning February 5, 2024, and the institute will provide remote learning options for students outside of NYC.

“We want to build a community of musical theatre creators, providing a space for writers to find collaborators and mentors," Carner said in a statement. "Our curriculum will foster individual artistic expression and collaborative exploration while also providing a solid framework and technical training in the craft of musical theatre creation. Above all, we’ll be working to keep our students inspired and supported in achieving their artistic visions.”

Carner has previously taught at Yale University, New York University, and Temple University. For his work in the industry, he has received accolades including the Kleban Prize and the Richard Rodgers Award.
