Classic Arts News Metropolitan Opera to Celebrate Stephen Schwartz with Gala Concert

Kristin Chenoweth, Sutton Foster, and more will perform at the special benefit evening.

The Metropolitan Opera will present a special benefit concert celebrating the 75th birthday of composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz December 11. The gala concert will feature Broadway and opera stars performing the Wicked songwriter's greatest hits.

The all-star lineup of performers includes Shoshana Bean, Angel Blue, Kristin Chenoweth, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Raúl EsparzaSutton FosterNick JonasLindsay MendezAlex Newell, Leslie Odom Jr., David Phelps, Ben PlattPaulo SzotJeanine Tesori, and Trisha Yearwood, with additional artists to be announced. The concert will be directed by Michael Mayer, and conducted by Rob Fisher.

Although primarily known for his work in musical theatre, Stephen Schwartz is no stranger to the world of opera. His own opera, Séance on a Wet Afternoon, had its world premiere in 2009, and his 2016 musical Schikaneder follows librettist Emanuel Schikaneder through the creation of his most famous opera, The Magic Flute.
