Lin-Manuel Miranda truly doesn't stop. As he prepares to open Hamilton in Puerto Rico, returning as the title character, he and a handful of Hamilton colleagues have announced they have purchased the Midtown Drama Book Shop, saving the theatrical insitution in a last-minute move.
Miranda has been a vocal supporter of the book shop for years (famously stepping in, fans in tow, when a water leak damaged much of the inventory in 2016), and he's been working since news came in October that the store would have to shutter rather than pay a significant rent hike.
Now he will be the owner, along with Hamilton director Thomas Kail, Hamilton lead producer Jeffrey Seller, and Hamilton landlord James L. Nederlander (the Nederlander Organization owns the Richard Rodgers Theatre, the Broadway home to Hamilton). The quartet will be working with the city to find affordable rent for the 100-year-old store (which was awarded a special Tony Award in 2011) after it closes its doors at its current 40th Street location January 20.
A new location will be announced in the coming months.
