Classic Stage Company will kick off its 2019–2020 season with William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and round it out next spring with the Stephen Sondheim-John Weidman musical, Assassins. Both productions will be helmed by Tony-winning CSC Artistic Director John Doyle.

The upcoming season will also include two Gothic horror plays: Dracula and Frankenstein. The adaptations, based on the novels by Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley, respectively, will be presented in repertory at the Off-Broadway theatre January–March 2020.

“All of the works this season explore disturbing aspects of humanity, yet they all have beauty," says Doyle. "There’s nothing more poetically beautiful than Macbeth’s ‘Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow’ speech; there’s tenderness in the two gothic plays; there’s so much humor in Assassins—and such deep psychological and social insight in all of them."

Dates, casting, and full creative teams for all production will be announced at a later date.

Assassins marks the third and final Weidman-Sondheim collaboration Doyle has directed, following Pacific Overtures at CSC and Road Show at the Public. Following an Off-Broadway production in 1990, the musical was seen on Broadway in 2004. It depicts the lives of nine men and women who either killed (or tried to kill) one of the Presidents of the United States. In 2017, the show was revived at New York City Center, directed by Anne Kauffman, as part of the Encores! Off-Center summer season.
