Previews will begin March 29 at the Broadway Theatre, most recently the home of the new musical Here Lies Love, with opening night scheduled for April 25. The lead producer is Chunsoo Shin, a prominent figure of Korean theatre.

Shin says in a statement, “I am passionate about producing this show because it provides a modern audience with the true essence of idealism that is expressed eloquently in the novel and now on stage. The Great Gatsby is a masterpiece that grows and changes as its experienced by each new generation, in every culture, and people—and yet, still maintains its uniqueness, with its fascinating characters that burst with vitality."

The Great Gatsby features music and lyrics by Tony nominees Nathan Tysen (Paradise Square) and Jason Howland (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) and a book by Jonathan Larson Grant winner Kait Kerrigan (The Mad Ones). Marc Bruni (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) again directs with choreography by Dominique Kelley (Mariah’s Magical Christmas Special).

Set in the Roaring '20s, the musical follows eccentric millionaire Jay Gatsby, who will stop at nothing in his tragic pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, a wealthy young woman whom he loved in his youth. To make such a classic story fresh for the stage, Kerrigan previously said she wanted to take a closer look at the female characters.

"[The women] are kind of given short shrift in the novel, and painted as very two-dimensional," Kerrigan explained. "I was excited about trying to explore the actions that they take, and trying to make sense of them. So that, not that you sympathize with them, but that you understand them."

LaPointe and Rachael Geier, arrangements by Jason Howland, orchestrations by Jason Howland and Kim Scharnberg, and musical direction by Daniel Edmonds.
