Three-time Tony nominee Brian d'Arcy James, currently in the acclaimed, recently extended Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods, stars in the new film The Cathedral, which will open in New York September 2 at Film at Lincoln Center and subsequently stream on MUBI beginning September 9.

Written, directed, and edited by Ricky D’Ambrose, the film casts James (Something Rotten!, Sweet Smell of Success, Shrek the Musical, West Side Story) as Richard Damrosch opposite Monica Barbarbo as Lydia Damrosch with Mark Zeisler as Nick Orkin, Geraldine Singer as Flora Orkin, Hudson McGuire as Jesse (age 3–5), Henry Glendon Walter V as Jesse (age 9), Robert Levey II as Jesse (age 12), and William Bednar-Carter as Jesse (age 16).

The film also features Madeline Hudelson as Kara Orkin, Linnea Gregg as Christine Orkin (adult), Siena Marino as Christine Orkin (child), Cynthia Mace as Billie Alloway, Erich Rausch as Ted Alloway, Candy Dato as Josephine, Melinda Tanner as Claire Damrosch, Gorman John Ruggiero as Dominic Damrosch, Andrea Woodbridge as Marie, and more.

The Cathedral tells the story of the Damrosch family, whose rise and fall is seen through the eyes of its youngest member, Jesse. Using photos and archival news footage, D’Ambrose shows how a family’s financial and emotional wear and tear can reflect a country’s sociopolitical fortunes and follies.

The film was previously screened at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, and New Directors/New Films.
