Jonathan Spector's Eureka Day is London-bound via The Old Vic, where a new production is set to run September 6–October 31 starring Academy, Golden Globe, and Emmy winner Helen Hunt. Katy Rudd (Camp Siegfried, The Ocean at the End of the Lane) will direct.
The timely play follows Carina, who has just become a freshman member of the board of directors at her son's new private school. A mumps outbreak hits the school, setting off a heated debate between parents—and a deluge of Facebook trolls. Exploring the struggle to find community consensus when no one can agree with the facts, the play may seem ripped from the headlines of 2022, but it, in fact, premiered at California's Aurora Theater in 2018 and played an Off-Broadway run at Colt Coeur in 2019.
Further casting and creative team for the Old Vic production will be announced in the coming weeks. The production will be co-presented with Sonia Friedman Productions (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), which may indicate further commercial plans for the staging.
Best known for her screen work, including As Good As It Gets and TV's Mad About You, Hunt is no stranger to the stage. She's appeared in Broadway productions of Our Town, Twelfth Night, and Life x 3; Our Town and The Taming of the Shrew Off-Broadway; and a U.S. tour of Love Letters, among others.
Spector's plays include This Much I Know, Siesta Key, Good. Better. Best. Bested., and Best Available.
