Jonathan Spector's Eureka Day officially opens its European premiere at London's The Old Vic September 23 after beginning performances September 6. The run will continue through October 31. Academy, Golden Globe, and Emmy winner Helen Hunt stars, with Katy Rudd (Camp Siegfried, The Ocean at the End of the Lane) at the helm.
The timely play follows Carina, who has just become a freshman member of the board of directors at her son's new private school. A mumps outbreak hits the school, setting off a heated debate between parents—and a deluge of Facebook trolls.
Joining Hunt, starring as Suzanne, are Kirsten Foster (Life of Pi, The Sandman) as May, Mark McKinney (The Kids in the Hall, Superstore) as Don, Ben Schnetzer (The Book Thief, Pride) as Eli, Susan Kelechi Watson (This is Us, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) as Carina, and Rachel Handshaw as Winter. Rounding out the company as understudies are Alex Cartuson, Shin-Fei Chen, John Vernon, and Pippa Winslow.
The production features set and costume design by Rob Howell, lighting design by Jon Clark, sound design by Donato Wharton, video design by Andrzej Goulding, music by Jherek Bischoff, casting by Jim Carnahan, voice coaching by Charlie Hughes-D’Aeth, and dialect coaching by Penny Dyer.
Eureka Day premiered at California's Aurora Theater in 2018 and played an Off-Broadway run at Colt Coeur in 2019. The production is co-presented with Sonia Friedman Productions (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), possibly indicating further commercial plans for the staging.
Best known for her Oscar-winning screen work, including As Good As It Gets and TV's Mad About You, Hunt has appeared on stage in Our Town, Twelfth Night, and Life x 3 on Broadway; Our Town and The Taming of the Shrew Off-Broadway; and a U.S. tour of Love Letters.
Spector's plays include This Much I Know, Siesta Key, Good. Better. Best. Bested., and Best Available.
