The previously announced Broadway debut of Gerard Alessandrini's long-running musical theatre parody Forbidden Broadway has been postponed due to an overcrowded Broadway slate, per a statement from producers. The show, titled Forbidden Broadway: Merrily We Stole a Song, was initially announced to begin a Broadway debut at the Hayes Theater July 29, a date that later got moved up to July 12.

"We made the difficult decision today to postpone the upcoming Broadway production of Forbidden Broadway on Broadway: Merrily We Stole A Song," say producers Ryan Bogner, Victoria Lang, and Tracey McFarland in a joint statement. "The Broadway landscape is enormously crowded at this moment, and while we adore Forbidden Broadway, we are disappointed that the show will not open at the Hayes on Broadway this summer. New programming for the Hayes Theater this summer will be announced soon."

The series debuted in 1982 at New York’s 130-seat Palsson’s Supper Club. The revue has gone on to play in over 200 cities around the world. The show has spawned multiple iterations with Alessandrini continually updating the material to reflect Broadway’s current slate; a few evergreens remain. For his work on Forbidden Broadway in all its forms, Alessandrini and the show received a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre and several Drama Desk Awards. Alessandrini's spoof of Hamilton, entitled Spamilton, played New York and continues to tour the country.

The most recent version, Forbidden Sondheim: Merrily We Stole a Song, played several performances at Manhattan's Green Fig Cabaret Theater in November 2023.
