West End favorites Denise Gough and Jack Thorne received 2022 BAFTA TV nominations for their respective projects, among many other stage performers.
Two-time Olivier winner Gough is nominated for Best Leading Actress for playing Connie Mortensen in the miniseries Too Close. She is nominated alongside her costar Emily Watson. Gough was last seen on stage as Harper Pitt in acclaimed West End and Broadway revivals of Angels in America. The production won the Olivier Award and Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.
Watson has also graced the West End stage, starring in Royal Shakespeare Company's productions of All's Well That Ends Well and The Taming of the Shrew. Sticking to her Shakespeare roots, the actor appeared in the TV movie adaptation of King Lear opposite Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. More stage credits include her Olivier Award-winning performance in Donmar Warehouse's Uncle Vanya.
Playwright Thorne is nominated for Best Writer of a Drama for his pandemic drama Help. The television movie accumulated six nominations in total, including a Best Leading Actress nod for Jodie Comer and Best Single Drama. Thorne is known to audiences on the West End and Broadway as writer of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Thorne also wrote the latest adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carole, which premiered at the Old Vic before moving to Broadway's Lyceum Theatre, as well as the musical adaptation of King Kong.
Omari Douglas's role in the television drama It's a Sin earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Role. The stage actor is currently up for an Olivier Award for playing Manuel in Donmar Warehouse's production of Nick Payne's Constellations. Recently, he starred in Playhouse Theatre's star-studded revival of Cabaret, opposite Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley.
The BAFTA TV Awards ceremony takes place May 8 and will be broadcast live on BBC One. It will be available for streaming following the event on BBC iPlayer.
