David Oyelowo, who recently appeared Off-Broadway in Othello at New York Theatre Workshop, will star in a new live-action musical from Disney. The film, titled Cyrano the Moor, is penned by playwright and Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney and is inspired by both Shakespeare’s Othello and Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oyelowo will also produce alongside his wife Jessica Oyelowo, as well as Yoruba Saxon.
Unlike Disney’s lengthy lineup of live adaptations, including Aladdin, The Lion King, Dumbo, and The Little Mermaid, the project is not based on a previous Disney animated film.
In addition to Othello, Oyelowo is known for his performances in the films Selma, A United Kingdom, and Queen of Katwe. McCraney won an Oscar earlier this year for the adapted screenplay for Moonlight, based on his play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. He is also the playwright of Head of Passes, which is currently playing in Los Angeles.
