Tony nominee Robert O'Hara is set to direct a feature film adaptation of his play Barbecue, Deadline reports. Tony and Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo will lead the cast, alongside Marisa Tomei and Danai Gurira.
Barbecue was presented at The Public Theater in 2015. The comedy follows the O'Mallerys, a dysfunctional group of siblings who stage an intervention for their sister Barbara when her drug addiction spirals.
O'Hara and Domingo previously collaborated on Colman Domingo's Wild With Happy, which was presented by The Public Theater in 2012. O'Hara recently directed the New York City Center Encores! production of Jelly's Last Jam. He received a Tony nomination in 2020 for his work as director of Jeremy O. Harris' Slave Play.
Domingo recently appeared as Mister in the movie musical adaptation of The Color Purple, and received an Academy Award nomination for his title role in the Netflix film Rustin soon after. He is currently set to direct and star in a new Nat King Cole biopic, and is playing Michael Jackson’s father in the upcoming biopic Michael. Domingo received a Tony nomination for his performance in The Scottsboro Boys in 2010.
