Nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were revealed January 23, and a host of theatrical favorites are in the running.
Wicked, the mega-hit film adaptation of the Broadway musical, was one of the most nominated films of the year, bringing in 10 nominations, including those for Best Picture, a Best Actress in a Leading Role nod for Cynthia Erivo, a Best Actress in a Supporting Role nod for Ariana Grande, and creative nods for Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design (for Tony winner Paul Tazewell), Original Score, Makeup and Hair Styling, Sound, and Visual Effects.
The only film to outpace Wicked in nominations is another musical film, Emilia Pérez. Pérez brought in 14 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role for Karla Sofia Gascon, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Zoe Saldana, and nods for Directing, Adapted Screenplay, International Feature Film, Film Editing, Cinematography, Original Score, Makeup and Hair Styling, Sound, and an Original Song nods for two tracks: "El Mal" and "Mi Camino." Only time will tell which musical film will come out on top.
Additional theatrical nominations include the Broadway vet-stacked Best Actor in a Leading Role category, which includes Tony nominee Colman Domingo for his performance in Sing Sing, Tony winner Ralph Fiennes for his performance in Conclave, Timothée Chalamet for his performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, and Sebastian Stan for his performance as Donald Trump in The Apprentice.
Chalamet-led biopic A Complete Unknown, which depicts Dylan's rise to fame with the help of some of his most famous songs, brought in a handful of nominations in addition to his performance nod, including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Edward Norton's performance as Pete Seeger, and Monica Barbaro's performance as Joan Baez, plus creative nods for Directing, Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, and Sound.
Similarly, Domingo's Sing Sing, which depicts the experience of incarcerated individuals in a theatrical rehabilitation program, received additional nominations for Adapted Screenplay and an Original Song nomination for "Like a Bird."
Kieran Culkin, soon to return to Broadway in Glengarry Glen Ross, picked up a Best Actor in a Supporting Role nod for his performance in A Real Pain, as did Tony winner Jeremy Strong for his performance as Roy Cohn in The Apprentice.
