New Jersey's McCarter Theatre Center is currently workshopping a musical adaptation of E.L. Konigsburg’s novel From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, which will culminate in invitation-only performances June 16-17.
Directed by Sarah Rasmussen, the cast includes Tony nominee Charl Brown, Michael Deaner, Ali Ewoldt, Tony nominee Alison Fraser, Madeline Hudelson, Mylinda Hull, Jade Jones, Elliott Mattox, Honor Blue Savage, and James Seol.
With music by Adam Ben-David, a book by Jessica Penzias, and lyrics by Christyn Budzyna, the new musical follows 11-year-old Claudia Kincaid and her younger brother Jamie, as they hide out at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In this theatrical retelling, the art in the museum comes to life as the siblings set out to unravel a mystery surrounding a statue with rumored ties to Michelangelo.
“McCarter’s mission is rooted in the belief that theatre is not just a space for showcasing polished productions, but a platform for nurturing creativity and providing opportunities for artists to experiment, grow, and perfect their craft,” says McCarter Artistic Director Sarah Rasmussen. “We embrace the responsibility of producing and workshopping up-and-coming productions, understanding that this vital process is the lifeblood of innovation in the theatre industry.”
