Grosses Broadway Grosses Analysis: Box Office Soars as Moulin Rouge!, Phantom, and Harry Potter All Bring in Record Ticket Sales

The long-running Andrew Lloyd Webber musical continued to take a victory lap in its penultimate week on Broadway.

Grosses are in, and with 33 shows up and running, they are soaring. Broadway made a cumulative $38,594,054 last week (the highest overall gross since New Year's), and 280,760 theatregoers saw shows with an impressive average admission of $137.46. Aladdin and Wicked gave nine performances each (one more than the usual eight), which certainly helped, but it was a strong week nonetheless.

In fact, at least three shows broke box-office records last week. Both Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Moulin Rouge! enjoyed their highest-grossing eight-performance week of the year, and The Phantom of the Opera, in the penultimate week of its historic 35-year run, continued its victory lap, breaking the previous week's record to again enjoy the highest-grossing week of its entire run. Bringing in $3,648,872.13, the musical has a solid shot at besting The Music Man's record gross of $3.9 million, or dare we say perhaps even breaking into the $4 million club. We'll have to wait until next week to find out. The musical plays its final performance at the Majestic April 16.

Among newer productions, Sweeney Todd is continuing to prove an early winner, bringing in $1.8 million and getting awfully close to joining the $2 million club. & Juliet and Parade are also seeing continued success, with Lincoln Center Theater's revival of Camelot showing respectable numbers while still in previews—the Lerner and Loewe musical brought in $931,246 last week even with leading man Jordan Donica missing several performances due to illness.

Attendance continues to be very healthy at the vast majority of shows on the Main Stem—only 10 of the 33 currently running shows played to less than 90% of their seats filled. This helps extra at shows playing especially large houses, like Wicked at the Gershwin, Aladdin at the New Amsterdam, and The Lion King at the Minskoff, all of which regularly top the list of shows seen by the most individual theatregoers.
