Pennsylvania's Bucks County Playhouse production of Jonathan Larson's tick, tick...BOOM! takes the stage June 23 with Eric Rosen at the helm. Performances continue through July 15.
Andy Mientus (Spring Awakening) stars as Jonathan, with Krystina Alabado (Mean Girls) as Susan and Noah J. Ricketts (Frozen) as Michael.
"Jonathan Larson has been my idol since my days as a teenage 'Renthead,' so to embody the man himself, in tick, tick...BOOM! is a dream come true and a challenge I've been eager to tackle for my entire career," said Mientus in an earlier statement. "I can't imagine better teammates for this adventure than Krystina and Noah, who are first class talents and dear friends. And I'm especially excited to finally take the stage in person at the Playhouse, having made a digital debut there during the pandemic in Ladies of the Canyon. Guided by this stellar creative team, our tick, tick...BOOM! is going to be a total labor of love and, I hope, a real treat for audiences at the Playhouse."
The musical follows the young composer during a milestone birthday in 1990, through his theatrical ambitions and his relationships and friendships against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic. The work started life as a “rock monologue” that Larson, best known for his Broadway musical Rent, himself performed as a solo show. Five years after his 1996 death, the work was adapted into a three-character musical, with David Auburn filling in as a script consultant. That version has since played Off-Broadway, in London, and at theatres around the world. Lin-Manuel Miranda directed a 2021 film adaptation for Netflix starring Andrew Garfield.
Joining Rosen on the creative team at Bucks County are choreographer Paul McGill, music director Rodney Bush, scenic designer Jack Magaw, lighting designer Paul Miller, costume designer Devario Simmons, sound designer Ashton Michael Corey, and projection designer Stivo Arnoczy. Peter Wolf is production stage manager, and Jason Carroll is assistant stage manager. Casting is by Paul Hardt.
