25 DAYS OF TONYS: Why Does Corey Hawkins Love Tony Press Day? | Playbill

Tony Awards 25 DAYS OF TONYS: Why Does Corey Hawkins Love Tony Press Day? As we countdown to the Tony Awards, first-time nominee Corey Hawkins shares his reaction to the news and his favorite part about the Tony meet-and-greet.

Tony nominee Corey Hawkins may be most recognizable as Dr. Dre in the big-screen hit Straight Outta Compton, or to television fans as the face of 24: Legacy, but Hawkins got his start in theatre. A graduate of Juilliard, Hawkins made his Broadway debut in Romeo + Juliet as Tybalt to Condola Rashad’s Juliet.

Now, Hawkins stars alongside seven-time Emmy winner and two-time Tony nominee Allison Janney and Emmy nominee and Tony winner John Benjamin Hickey in John Guare’s Six Degrees of Separation. As Paul, a young man who cons New York’s elite into believing he is the son of Sidney Poitier, Hawkins moves audiences and caught the eye of the Tony Nominating Committee. In the video above, he shares his reaction to the nominations, who he was most excited to see on Tony press day, and how he felt the first time he saw his name in a Playbill.
