Lucas Hnath’s A Doll’s House, Part 2 picks up 15 years after the curtain falls on Henrik Ibsen’s original A Doll’s House. So what is it like to write a part two when you didn’t write part one?
“Easy when the playwright in question is dead,” says Hnath with a laugh.
“There’s something actually liberating about it because certain things are kind of fixed for you,” he adds. “You know I have to put this stuff in there, but the rest is up to me. So in some ways it’s actually easier than just writing something that exists entirely on its own.”
The world-premiere production just announced an extension through January 2018, and Hnath’s Tony nomination marks his Broadway debut.
