Liberty Theatre

The Liberty Theatre was built at 234 W. 42nd Street in 1904, designed by architects Herts & Tallant. The Liberty housed George M. Cohan’s new musical Little Johnny Jones in 1904 and later showcased To the Ladies by George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly. Kern, Kaufman, Cohan, and Gershwin created a series of shows here in the 1920s. In the summer of 1923, George M. Cohan’s Little Nelly Kelly was produced at the Liberty. George Gershwin’s musical Tip-Toes, starring Jeanette MacDonald and Queenie Smith, ran in 1924. The theatre’s final legitimate production ended on March 18, 1933, after a single performance of Masks and Faces. The venue stands today, uninhabited, and its future remains uncertain.
