Composer Jeffrey Stock (Triumph of Love) and book writer Marc Acito ("How I Paid For College") are at work on a musical adaptation of E.M. Forster's "A Room with a View."

Songs From an Unmade Bed: In Concert, a solo work starring Michael Winther that features lyrics by Mark Campbell and music by 18 composers, is held May 26 at 8 PM at New York City's SubCulture.

New York City's SubCulture, which is currently hosting Jason Robert Brown's year-long residency, will offer a slew of theatrical events during the months of May and June.

Tin Pan Alley Theatre Company is making a bit of Portland theatre history by offering the Northwest premiere of the 1997 Tony-nominated Broadway musical, Triumph of Love — which featured Tony winner Betty Buckley and Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham — free of charge.

Betty Buckley fans will be thrilled with the just-released cast recording of Triumph of Love, the Susan Birkenhead/Jeffrey Stock/James Magruder musical loosely based on the Marivaux play. Buckley sounds terrific on the CD, whether she's belting the opening lines of "This Day of Days," tenderly caressing the notes in the quartet of "Teach Me Not to Love You" or bringing an emotional intensity to her duets with Susan Egan ("You May Call Me Phocion") and F. Murray Abraham ("The Tree"). And, her two solo pieces, "Serenity" and "If I Cannot Love," are masterfully crafted and delivered. Just listen to the way she builds "Serenity" from a quiet remembrance of her youth to a full-voiced declaration of love's surprise arrival. She is also equally effective on "If I Cannot Love," which was unfortunately cut during previews but is thankfully preserved on this JAY Records release.

If an 18-century French comedy by Pierre Marivaux seems like unlikely material for a Broadway musical, think of other classic plays that have been musicalized with great success.
