DESCRIPTION

Sunrise Theatre Company is seeking actors 18+ with daytime availability for our upcoming educational theatre production of Freedom Train: the story of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. Rehearsals begin o/a January 2nd, with performances starting in late January and running through mid-March. Approximately 15 performances are anticipated, with a project stipend of $600 (subject to increase if additional performances are booked).


Commuters from NYC will be reimbursed for LIRR train fare to/from rehearsals and performances. Actors who drive to performance venues will receive parking/toll reimbursement where applicable. Hotel accommodations and transportation for out-of-town dates are provided by Sunrise.


To be considered, please submit either a reel or 32 bar cut to [email protected]. Please note that in this production, race is integral to the story, and submissions that do not align with the character descriptions provided by the rightsholders will not receive consideration. We are seeking actors to fill the following roles:


HARRIET - young leading lady, high energy, a leader, a fighter, charismatic. Conductor of the Underground railroad and wife of Jon Tubman. African-American.


THE OVERSEER - the slave boss on the plantation. Aggressive and "the heavy" character man. Caucasian.


JACOB - Strong leader, a quaker and friend of the slaves. He lives near the plantation and does not own any slaves. He tries to help free them and is the first stop on the underground railroad. Caucasian.


RIT - Harriet's Mother. Extremely spiritual and also a slave on the plantation. African-American.


BEN - a good honest man. Harriet's father and also a slave. He is optimistic about being set free. African-American


DAVID - energetic, rebellious juvenile. Harriet's brother who is trying to organize a way for the family to escape north. He finds himself angry and thinks there is no such thing as freedom in the north. African-American.
