JANE: Female, 25-30, white, young professional living in the Bay Area, knows how to dress to fit in,
“self-aware” to a fault, wouldn’t be out of place at SoulCycle.

LOYD: Male, 60’s or older, white, lived in the West Bay his whole life, rocks a hippie-adjacent sort of
look, has a high opinion of himself, wouldn’t be out of place at a Grateful Dead show.

SEEKING:

THE LIBRARIAN, female or female-identifying. Any age over 35. A person who might have lived in a
city, or thought she'd live in a city, or did live in a city until life happened. Funny with a side of sly.
Smart without question. A woman who loves what she does. Most of the time

THE MOTHER, female, late 30s - 50s. A Woman Who Cares. Who has lived a surprising amount of
life. More layered than she appears, than she's allowed to be, or than she chooses to reveal.
Genuinely religious. A woman who loves her children. All of the time.

THE MANAGER, played by the same actress as The Librarian. A middle manager on her way to the
next level. Corporate Material. Compulsively inarticulate, often interrupting herself. Not a word person.
Something surprising and almost violent dressed in management training. A woman who loves her
job. And her fish.

THE EDITOR, played by the same actress as The Librarian and The Manager. Another mother. A
different mother. A hugger. A woman who loves a good book. A woman who wants to help.

FURLOUGH’S PARADISE

by a.k. payne
Directed by Jada S. Dixon
First Rehearsal: April 13/14, 2026
Previews: April 30 – May 1, 2025
Opening: May 2, 2026
Closing: May 31, 2026

SEEKING:

MINA: Whose name means ‘love,’ an only child, a cousin, born 1991, mid 20s-mid 30s, moves with
the illusion of having everything under control, cares deeply, radical, yet to find her truest self (on the
verge of this), the responsible one, grounded with expensive taste, has forgotten the sound of her own
laugh, feels where she’s been under her skin but cannot show it, a Black girl becoming grown,
perhaps a woman dreaming towards more true language.

SADE: Whose name means ‘honor earns a crown’ or ‘rain,’ Mina calls her ‘de,’ an only child, a cousin,
born 1991, mid 20s-30s, quick-wit, infinite sense of humor and self, cares deeply for her communities,
a dreamer, logical and calculating, has a very clear map to freedom, has grown up in prison, tough edges: seemingly unshakable, infinitely tender, rocked in instances of injustice. At the start of the play, she has convinced herself that by blood she has no family, feels where she’s been with every breath, has learned to be very loud when she can, a Black girl becoming grown, perhaps a woman dreaming towards more true language.
