Escaped Alone, opens Jan. 28 following previews that began Jan. 21, for a run through March 12.

The play, which revolves around three old friends and a neighbour, is set on a summer of afternoons in the backyard, and involves tea and catastrophe. It is directed by regular Churchill collaborator James MacDonald who has previously directed her plays Love and Information (subsequently also Off-Broadway) and Drunk Enough to Say I Love You? at the theatre. The cast comprises Linda Bassett, Deborah Findlay, Kika Markham and June Watson in the play which is described in press mateirals as "a four-hander about old friends and catastrophe." The production is designed by Miriam Buether, with lighting by Peter Mumford and sound by Christopher Shutt.

Churchill's previous plays for the Royal Court include Ding Dong the Wicked, Love and Information, Seven Jewish Children, A Number, Far Away, Blue Heart, Serious Money, Top Girls and Cloud Nine.

James Macdonald’s previous work for the Royal Court Theatre includes The Wolf from the Door, Circle Mirror Transformation, Love and Information (and Off-Broadway), Cock, Drunk Enough to Say I Love You?, Blasted and the European and U.S. tours of Sarah Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis. He was associate director at the Royal Court 1992-2007.

Bassett has previously appeared at the Royal Court in Churchill's Love & Information and Far Away, as well as In Basildon, Wastwater, Lucky Dog, The Stone, The Recruiting Officer, Our Country’s Good, Serious Money, Aunt Dan and Lemon, Abel’s Sister and Fen. Serious Money, Aunt Dan and Lemon and Fen all subsequently transferred to New York's Public Theater, where she reprised her performances. Other theatre credits include Roots and Phaedra (both Donmar Warehouse), People (National) and A Winter’s Tale and Pericles (both RSC). Findlay’s credits at the Royal Court include Churchill's Top Girls (subsequentlly New York) and Tom and Viv. Other theatre credits include Coriolanus, Moonlight, Madame De Sade, John Gabriel Borkman, The Cut (all at the Donmar Warehouse), Timon of Athens, Bernarda Alba, The Winter’s Tale, The Mandate, Stanley, Once in a While (all at the National) and Vincent River (New York's 59e59 Theater).

Markham’s credits at the Royal Court include Tribes, Time Present and Twelfth Night. Other theatre includes Tplays at the Old Vic, Print Room, Arcola, Trcicyle, National, Young Vic, Gate and Bush Theatres.

Watson’s Royal Court credits include Talking to Terrorists, Kosher Harry, Sliding with Suzanne, Beside Herself, Saved, Small Change, Life Price and Glasshouses. Other theatre credits include The Cripple of Inishmaan (West End's Noel Coward, then Broadway's Cort Theater) and appearances at Hampstead Theatre, the Almeida, National and Young Vic
