Tony Awards Working in Broadway 'Never Gets Old' for Tony-Winning Sound Designer Nevin Steinberg, Who's Worked on 57 Shows

Steinberg won his second Tony for sound designing the Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd.

At the Tony Awards, after the statues are given to the winners, they are taken to the media room, where they speak to journalists about their prizes. Playbill was able to have some one-on-one time with some of the 2023 Tony winners. We spoke with sound designer Nevin Steinberg after he won the Tony for Best Sound Design of a Musical for his work on Sweeney Todd.

This is Steinberg's second Tony award, following his win for Hadestown, but he certainly isn't new to the industry: Steinberg made his Broadway debut with The Full Monty in 2000, and has racked up an impressive list of 57 Broadway shows.

"To be part of a community that just continues to have curiosity and joy and love baked into the DNA of what we do...I always feel so lucky to walk out on a Broadway stage. I still do. I've been doing this for a little while now, but it never gets old. I try to enter the theatre every night as my best self, and working with this group of people really brings that out in me."

After all these years, Steinberg still stays in touch with the mentors that changed his life. "I was texting tonight, actually before the show, with Abe Jacob, who basically invented the business I'm in. He was the first sound designer on Broadway; he did A Chorus Line, he did Hair, he did Pippin, and we're still in close touch. I know he's very proud of me. And I of course, I'm very grateful to him for leading the way."
