Four members of The Go-Go's—Charlotte Caffey, Belinda Carlisle, Kathy Valentine and Jane Wiedlin—wowed audiences at Broadway’s new musical Head Over Heels July 12 with a surprise curtain call performance. (The Go-Go’s fifth member, Gina Schock, was unable to perform while recovering from an injury.)
The Go-Go’s joined the cast of the musical, which features RuPaul's Drag Race star Peppermint, Jeremy Kushnier (Paramour), Rachel York (Disaster!), Alexandra Socha (Spring Awakening), Andrew Durand (Spring Awakening), Taylor Iman Jones (Groundhog Day), Bonnie Milligan (the national tour of Kinky Boots), and Tom Alan Robbins (The Lion King). The quartet sang “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “Head Over Heels.”
The musical, currently in previews at the Hudson Theatre, officially opens July 26.
Head Over Heels’ score includes 18 hits by The Go Go’s, including the two aforementioned tunes, “We Got the Beat,” “Get Up and Go,” and “Vacation,” as well as Carlisle’s solo hits “Mad About You” and “Heaven is a Place on Earth.”
The new musical, directed by Michael Mayer, is based on The Arcadia by Philip Sidney and was originally conceived and written by Jeffy Whitty (Avenue Q) but has been adapted for this Broadway version by James Magruder. The production features choreography by Spencer Liff, orchestrations by Tom Kitt, musical direction by Kimberly Grigsby, scenic design by Julian Crouch, costume design by Arianne Phillips, lighting design by Kevin Adams, projection design by Andrew Lazarow, sound design by Kai Harada, hair and makeup design by Campbell Young and Associates, and casting by Jim Carnahan.
