With this year being one of Broadway's busiest seasons yet, it is a competitive year for Tony Award nominations. Fifteen brand new musicals hit the Main Stem this season, five of which were nominated for the 2024 Tony Award for Best Musical. Check out the Best Musical nominees above, and see the full list of 2024 Tony nominations here.
Leading the nominations for musicals this season with 13 nominations, including Best Musical, is the Alicia Keys jukebox musical Hell's Kitchen. Set in the mid '90s in an apartment high above the energy and grit of Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, the musical boasts a New York full of freedom, excitement, and the possibility of love.
Also nominated is the musical adaptation of The Outsiders. With a sweeping score by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Justin Levine, The Outsiders encapsulates the essence of S.E. Hinton's classic novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s film's timeless tale of bonds and brotherhood.
Another nominee for Best Musical this year is Illinoise, the Sufjan Stevens dance musical. Told through live music performed by an 11-member band, three vocalists and impressionistic choreography by Tony-winner Justin Peck, Illinoise centers in on friendship, first love, grief, and growing up.
Additionally, Shaina Taub's Suffs is a nominee fort Best Musical. Suffs spotlights the history of the American suffragists and forgotten women who fought for the right to vote. The show's entirely female cast playing the women in Suffs tell the story of their hard-won victory then, and the continued ongoing fight now.
The final nominee for this year's Best Musical is Water for Elephants. Based on the best-selling novel and 2011 film of the same title, Water for Elephants tells the story of a young runaway who joins a traveling circus, embarking on an adventure beyond his wildest dreams.
