Tony Winner Tim Lutkin Thinks of Lighting Design as a Supporting Role

At the Tony Awards, after the statues are given to the winners, they are taken to the media room, where they speak to journalists about their prizes. Playbill was able to have some one-on-one time with some of the 2023 Tony winners. We spoke with lighting designer Tim Lutkin following his win for Best Lighting Design of a Play for Life of Pi.

When speaking about Life of Pi, Lutkin described how he thinks of lighting design as a supporting role: "The actual masterpiece, I would say if I can, is the challenge of blending actors versus video content. And my role is to support their performances and connect them with the audience."

The British lighting designer has worked in London's West End for 18 years. While Life of Pi marks the first production he's worked on to transfer to Broadway, he's built a career for himself across the ocean that has won him two Oliviers for Chimerica and Life of Pi, and a third for Back to the Future: The Musical (which begins previews on Broadway June 30).
