The Sol Project, the New York-based collective of artists whose mission is to nurture and produce the work of Latinx playwrights, has added another Off-Broadway institution to its expanding network: New York Theatre Workshop. The Project has also announced its first national partnership—with Yale Repertory Theatre in Connecticut.
NYTW joins a roster of Off-Broadway theatres that have already signed on with The Sol Project: Playwrights Realm, MCC Theater, Atlantic Theater Company, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, New Georges, Women’s Project Theater, LAByrinth Theater Company, The Public Theater, and Playwrights Horizons. Every partner commits to co-produce a play with the Sol Project, to commission a new piece from a Latinx playwright for future production, and to meet with as many artists of color, in all fields—administrative, crew, and design—during the collaboration.
“New York Theatre Workshop gives great importance to collaborations with community partners, and a collaboration with The Sol Project is a very exciting new opportunity. We look forward to engaging on a number of exciting ideas,” said James C. Nicola, artistic director of NYTW.
The Sol Project is also working with its first national partner, Yale Rep, for the world-premiere production of Charise Castro Smith’s El Huracán, directed by Laurie Woolery. In the new play, a mother and daughter brace themselves for an epic hurricane to hit Miami as Abuela takes shelter in a world of memory, music, and magic. Performances will begin September 28 and continue through October 20.
“The Sol Project has been such a wonderful advocate for this play since the very beginning and I'm thrilled to have them as partners for the world premiere at Yale Rep,” said playwright Castro Smith.
“I vividly recall the thrill of discovering Charise Castro Smith’s singular gifts as a playwright at Yale Cabaret, and I’m delighted that Yale Rep will introduce her to a much wider local and national audience with the world premiere of her exquisite new play, El Huracán,” said James Bundy, Yale Rep’s artistic director. “I’m also grateful for the unique opportunity to work with The Sol Project, a collaboration that enhances our relationships to leading theatre makers and wider audiences.”
The world premiere will mark The Sol Project's fourth production. The collective is made up of Jacob Padrón, Claudia Acosta, Elena Araoz, Adriana Gaviria, David Mendizábal, Kyoung Park, and Woolery. For more information visit SolProject.org.
