Aug. 20: Heathers star Dave Thomas Brown stars as Elvis-impersonator-turned-drag-queen in The Legend of Georgia McBride, a heartwarming, music-filled comedy playing at the MCC Theatre.
Aug. 28: Amélie, a new musical based on the Academy Award-nominated film of the same title, opens at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California. Samantha Barks, who played Eponine in the film adaptation of "Les Miserables," stars as the whimsical and mischievous mademoiselle.
OPENINGS Aug. 20: Sara Bareilles, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter who penned the pop hits "Love Song" and "Brave," makes her musical theatre debut as the composer of the new musical Waitress, premiering at A.R.T with direction by Tony winner Diane Paulus and starring Beautiful's Jessie Mueller.
Aug. 24: A.R. Gurney's residency continues at the Signature Theatre with the premiere of his new comedy Love & Money, about wealthy widow Cornelia Cunningham, who is determined to donate almost everything she owns before her death. Maureen Anderman plays the lead in this play about class, family, legacy and race.
Aug. 27: The creative team behind the Tony-nominated Everyday Rapture reunites Off-Broadway for Whorl Inside a Loop, by Dick Scanlan and Sherie Rene Scott, who also stars. Scott plays a celebrity actress who ventures behind the bars of a maximum security prison in order to help the inmates tell their stories. Read the real-life inspiration behind the story here.
LAST CHANCE
Aug. 23: One of the Bard's rarely produced romantic dramas, Cymbeline, concludes this summer's outdoor performances of Shakespeare in the Park. Helmed by Tony winner Daniel Sullivan, the Shakespearean fairy tale features a stellar cast that includes Hamish Linklater, multi-Tony nominee Raúl Esparza, Lily Rabe and Patrick Page.
Aug 23: Stage legend Patti LuPone takes a final bow as the indomitable Irene, the matriarch at a local community theatre troupe in Reading, PA, in 1973. Douglas Carter Beane's Shows For Days follows a young boy's introduction to the world of theatre.
Aug. 30: Ramin Karimloo, who earned a Tony nomination for his performance as Jean Valjean in the Broadway production of Les Miserables, will finish up his run in the acclaimed production. He will be succeeded by Alfie Boe.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Through Aug. 30: The New York International Fringe Festival, the largest multi-arts festival in North America, kicked off its 19th year Aug. 14 and continues performances through Aug. 30 at 16 different venues in downtown Manhattan.
Aug. 24: 54 Below celebrates the one-year anniversary of the closing of Newsies, inviting cast members from the long-running show to the stage. With two concerts over the one night, the celebration will feature performances, stories and memories from the cast.
Aug. 25 – Sept. 6: Principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre Misty Copeland, who made history as the first African-American female to do so, will dance into the Broadway revival of On the Town. Copeland will dance for a two-week engagement only, with a permanent replacement to be announced at a later date.
